Dublin Day 1: Our First Blog!

This post features student writing.

Today was our first real day in Dublin and was filled with so many fun and educational experiences. We were split into two workshop groups that we will keep for the continuation of the trip. Chris’ group started their day writing in St. Stephen’s Green where they participated in an activity where we wrote a few sentences of a story and then passed their journal along so the student beside them could continue the story.  Then we went to Dublin’s Little Museum where we learned about the history of Dublin, U2, and Women in the Workplace and took small excerpts from the exhibits to make a collage poem. After that we  headed to lunch where we got to hang out and play table games.

At the Farmer’s Market, Carina did some olfactory research.

Julia’s group took a bus ride to Dun Laoghaire to visit a farmer’s market.  On the bus ride, we used words on signs to make a poem.  Once at the farmer’s market, we shared our poems and talked about the importance of using all five senses in our writing.  After that, we explored and observed and experienced the farmer’s market for our sensory writing assignment.  We ate lunch, played with puppies, and took lots of pictures together.  We then took a train and walked to meet Chris’ group at St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

At the cathedral we got to practice using our senses by eating chocolates and, in writing, describing their scent and flavor in depth. After, we each spread out through the park and people watched so we could come up with a character based on our observations. Finally, we shared our created characters and went back to our hostel for some down time.

For dinner, we went to a local hot-spot called Boxy’s. We told riddles, anti-jokes, and overall had a blast! Next, we strolled through downtown Dublin and stopped for some AMAZING gelato. After finishing our dessert, we walked to a park where we played charades and got to laugh with each other even more.

We ended our FABULOUS day with our big group meeting where we share our highs and lows and shout-outs.
